JOOLA 3S Paddle Series

JOOLA 3S Paddle Series Review: Perseus, Magnus, and Scorpeus

In 2024, JOOLA experienced a whirlwind of events that significantly impacted its journey and the pickleball industry as a whole. It all started in April when the original Gen 3 JOOLA paddles debuted, only to be removed from the USAP-approved paddle list by June. In August, JOOLA introduced the USAP-approved Mod-TA 15 paddles in the Perseus shape, closely resembling the original Gen 3 Perseus models. Then, in September, the highly anticipated joola 3S paddle series, which I’m reviewing in this article, was launched.

The original Gen 3 models attracted considerable attention, stirring a mix of praise and criticism for their powerful performance. This led to some players feeling disappointed when they had to return their Gen 3 paddles, while others appreciated the power reduction.

Now, JOOLA is back with the 3S series, which boasts UPA-A approval instead of USAP approval. The big question is whether these new paddles significantly differ from the original Gen 3 series. In this review, I’ll explore the construction differences between the 3S series and the original Gen 3 models, explain what UPA-A approval means for these paddles, and provide a detailed comparison of their performance.

JOOLA 3S Paddle Technology – How is it Different from Gen 3?

The JOOLA 3S series is a significant evolution from the Gen 3 models, primarily due to its innovative foam technology and core design. The 3S paddles feature a “non-compressed core,” offering a more durable build and superior performance consistency compared to their predecessors. This design change enhances the paddle’s longevity and reduces the risk of core crushing, a common issue with compressed core designs.

The 3S technology incorporates a Foam Outer Channel, which minimizes expansion and pressure against the polymer core. This subtle yet impactful change results in a paddle that’s easier to control while maintaining substantial power. The thermoformed construction and raw carbon fiber face further enhance the paddle’s playability, making it a formidable competitor on the court.

For players who experienced the power of the Gen 3 models, the 3S paddles offer a refined experience with a more controlled power output. While the pop is slightly reduced, the overall performance remains top-tier, making these paddles a worthy consideration for players seeking a balance between power and control.

JOOLA 3S Paddle Technology - How is it Different from Gen 3?

What is UPA-A Certification?

The UPA-A certification is a recent entrant in the paddle approval landscape, providing an alternative to the traditional USAP certification. While still refining its testing protocols, UPA-A focuses on maintaining controlled power in paddles, aligning with the evolving standards of competition play.

For players looking to participate in PPA tour events, the JOOLA 3S paddles are UPA-A approved, ensuring they meet the rigorous standards required for high-level play. Although only sometimes accepted at all tournaments, the UPA-A certification is gaining traction, and its focus on balancing power makes it an attractive option for players prioritizing control over sheer force.

While the future of paddle certification bodies is still unfolding, UPA-A’s partnership with JOOLA signals a commitment to advancing the sport by promoting innovative technologies that enhance the player experience.

Joola 3S Paddle Series Identity and Performance Summary

General Performance

The JOOLA 3S series is characterized by its robust power and pop, positioning these paddles in the elite tier for performance. Despite the toned-down power compared to Gen 3 models, the 3S paddles still rank in the 90th percentile for power, ensuring you can drive the ball with authority. The pop, while slightly reduced, remains impressive, providing a nice balance that enhances control and playability.

The availability of 16mm options in the 3S series offers a unique advantage over typical thinner core power paddles, providing more forgiveness without sacrificing performance. This flexibility allows players to select configurations that best suit their playing style, whether they prefer explosive power or a more controlled approach.

Power/Pop

Power and pop are where the JOOLA 3S paddles truly shine. The exponential power growth in these paddles is unmatched, rewarding big swings with even bigger returns. This characteristic makes them ideal for players who thrive on aggressive play, enabling them to capitalize on serves, drives, and overheads.

While the power is substantial, the 3S paddles require players to manage their swings carefully. The significant power potential necessitates focused play to prevent sending balls long or off-target. However, for those adept at harnessing this power, the paddles provide unparalleled offensive capabilities that can dominate the court.

Feel/Control

Control is a standout feature in the 3S series, thanks to the refined core design that minimizes pop without compromising power. The dynamic nature of these paddles allows for nuanced shot execution, adapting to the player’s input and the speed of play.

Despite the formidable power, the paddles are surprisingly easy to manage, offering a lively yet controlled feel. This makes them a versatile choice for players looking to balance power with precision, making them suitable for both offensive and defensive play.

Sweet Spot/Forgiveness

The JOOLA 3S paddles deliver a consistent sweet spot experience, crucial for maintaining shot accuracy and consistency across varying paddle shapes. The enhanced forgiveness, particularly in the 16mm models, makes these paddles more accessible to a broader range of players.

While the power drop-off near the throat is notable, the overall sweet spot performance is commendable, ensuring reliable play even during high-pressure situations. This makes the 3S paddles a dependable choice for players seeking both power and precision.

16mm Vs. 14mm Options

The choice between 16mm and 14mm paddles depends on personal preference and playing style. The 16mm paddles offer a higher ball trajectory, more power, and greater forgiveness, making them suitable for players who prioritize control and consistency.

Conversely, the 14mm options provide a firmer feel and a lower ball trajectory, appealing to those who value maneuverability and an aggressive playing style. While both options offer distinct advantages, the choice ultimately hinges on the player’s individual preferences and desired gameplay experience.

Spin

Spin potential in the JOOLA 3S paddles is impressive, with some models averaging over 2000 RPMs. This level of spin capability allows players to add an extra layer of complexity to their game, enhancing shot variety and making it easier to outmaneuver opponents.

The raw carbon fiber face plays a crucial role in generating spin, offering a responsive surface that grips the ball effectively. This makes the 3S paddles an excellent choice for players who rely on spin to control the pace and direction of play.

Maneuverability

Maneuverability is a key strength of the 3S series, thanks to the thoughtful design and weight distribution in each paddle. The varying swing weights across models provide options for players seeking either speed or stability, enabling them to tailor their paddle choice to their specific needs.

The combination of swing weight and twist weight ensures that the paddles are easy to handle, allowing for quick reactions and agile play. This makes the 3S paddles especially beneficial for players who rely on speed and agility to gain an edge in competitive matches.

The Big Question – Do You Need This Much Power?

Deciding whether the JOOLA 3S paddles are right for you boils down to your playing style and ability to harness power effectively. For players who can manage the additional power, these paddles offer a significant advantage, creating opportunities to dominate points and outplay opponents.

However, the added power comes with challenges, requiring precision and control to maximize effectiveness. Players must evaluate whether the benefits of increased power outweigh the potential for errors, ultimately choosing a paddle that complements their strengths and enhances their game.

Other Thoughts

The JOOLA 3S paddles offer unique features that set them apart in the market. Notably, the inclusion of an NFC-enabled chip for registration and authentication adds a modern touch, streamlining warranty management and reducing counterfeit concerns.

The paddles’ distinct sound is also worth mentioning, with the 14mm versions being noticeably louder. This might be a consideration for players who prefer a quieter game, but for most, the performance benefits will likely outweigh any noise-related concerns.

Performance Reviews by Paddle

What are the available options?

The JOOLA 3S series features four distinct shapes, each available in 16mm and 14mm widths. These options cater to a variety of playing styles, allowing players to select paddles that align with their preferences for shape, weight, and performance characteristics.

From the elongated Perseus and Magnus to the standard Scorpeus shape, each paddle offers unique advantages that make them suitable for different player profiles. The diversity in design ensures that the 3S series can accommodate a wide range of playing styles, from aggressive attackers to strategic defenders.

JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus 3S 16mm

The Perseus 3S 16mm paddle is the model used by the world’s top male player, Ben Johns, and it has been tested to deliver the highest power in its category. If you’re looking for unmatched control, this paddle is hard to beat. Whether you’re driving, serving, returning, or executing overheads, it adds significant speed and pressure to your shots, putting your opponents in a tough spot.

However, this increased power comes with a caveat: it can also make it easier to hit balls long. Players need to maintain focus with every hit; a relaxed or casual approach can lead to losing control of your shots.

This paddle features a swing weight on the higher end, measuring 121, which indicates that it may feel head-heavy. Typically, swing weights over 120 start to shift the balance, which can affect maneuverability. The range for the Perseus 3 is likely between 119 and 123, depending on the specific weight of the paddle you receive. While this isn’t an extreme number,

it’s important to keep in mind. If you prefer the elongated shape but desire a lighter swing weight, consider the Magnus 3 16mm. It offers a shorter handle than the Perseus 3, lowering the balance point and swing weight and making it easier to handle.

For twist weight, the Perseus 3 measures 6.2, which is about average for its elongated design and shows improvement over previous models. The Gen 2 Perseus was known for being less forgiving, but this newer version strikes a better balance, albeit at a heavier weight—there’s a trade-off to consider.

Who is the ideal player for the Perseus 3 16mm? If you play aggressively and have an attacking style, this paddle is a fantastic choice. Its higher power rating and slightly heavier construction make it best suited for skilled players at advanced levels.

While its power and weight can lead to more errors than winners if you need to be finely tuned in your technique, it can also unleash devastating shots when used correctly. For those interested in a similar style but preferring a more conservative option, the Scorpeus models may be worth exploring.

JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus 3S 14mm

The Perseus 3S 14mm shares many characteristics with its 16mm counterpart, albeit with a few distinct differences. While it provides a bit less power, it compensates with a touch more pop and enhanced maneuverability. However, this increased agility comes at the expense of a firmer feel and a smaller sweet spot.

I appreciated that the 14mm wasn’t as powerful and felt less jumpy at impact compared to the 16mm. This allowed me to control the ball better during drinks than I could with the 16mm. The lower control and feel rating of the 14mm compared to the 16mm stems from its firmer feel and less forgiving nature, which together create more challenges in terms of control.

The 14mm version is lighter and more maneuverable, allowing for greater ball speed on counters when you make contact with the sweet spot. Despite these advantages, most players would still prefer the playability and feel of the 16mm. However, the 14mm does have its niche.

As I noted in my series overview, the 14mm version has a lower ball flight trajectory compared to the 16mm. I found this beneficial in certain situations, as it allowed me to keep my drives lower with greater effectiveness. This feature may appeal to some players.

So, who would enjoy the Perseus 3 14mm? While the smaller sweet spot and firmer feel of this already powerful paddle make it more specialized, it will still attract those seeking both power and maneuverability, particularly those who appreciate the lower ball flight that the thinner core provides.

JOOLA Simone Jardim Hyperion 3S 16mm

Simone Jardim is a legend in the professional pickleball scene, and her choice of paddle reflects her exceptional skill and playing style. She favors a lighter, elongated paddle that enhances her maneuverability and control, particularly for her two-handed shots. The Hyperion 3S 16mm paddle aligns perfectly with her needs, offering a shape that emphasizes both comfort and precision.

This paddle shares the same total length and handle length as the Perseus model but distinguishes itself by being lighter and more agile. While the reduction in weight does result in a slight decrease in power and stability compared to the Perseus, the difference is minimal and manageable.

In fact, the lighter design allows players like Simone to add some weight if desired, enhancing the paddle’s stability while keeping the swing weight lighter than that of the Perseus 3 model.

So, who would benefit from using the Hyperion 3S 16mm? If you’re looking for an elongated shape and a longer handle but find the Perseus model too head-heavy, this paddle is the ideal choice. It combines lightweight maneuverability with the precision and control that serious players crave, making it a reliable option for those who prioritize consistency in their game.

JOOLA Tyson McGuffin Magnus 3S 16mm

The Magnus 3S 16mm paddle is designed with a power-focused approach, making it ideal for players who embrace an aggressive playing style. A key distinction between the Magnus 3 and the Perseus 3 models lies in the handle length; the Magnus features a shorter 5-inch handle compared to the 5.5-inch handle of the Perseus. This difference significantly affects the paddle’s dynamics and how it performs on the court.

The shorter handle of the Magnus 3 lowers the balance point and swing weight, resulting in a paddle that feels lighter and more maneuverable. This is especially advantageous for players who rely on quick reactions and fast-paced play, as it allows for swifter adjustments and easier handling.

However, this does come at the cost of a bit less power and pop, which can facilitate greater control during play.

Everything that applies to the Perseus 3 16mm model also holds for the Magnus 3. The choice between these two paddles ultimately boils down to personal preference regarding handle length.

If you don’t utilize two-handed shots in your game, the Magnus 3 is a fantastic option, offering similar playing characteristics to the Perseus 3 but with a lighter swing weight that enhances reaction time. Conversely, if you do employ two-handed shots, you might find the Magnus 3’s shorter handleless comfortable and not ideal for that style of play.

So, who would benefit from the Magnus 3 16mm? If you have an aggressive, attacking approach to your game, this paddle is sure to impress. Its lighter swing weight and increased manageability compared to the Perseus 3 make it an appealing choice. However, the shorter handle may only suit some, especially those who favor two-handed shots.

JOOLA Tyson McGuffin Magnus 3S 14mm

The Magnus 3S 14mm paddle perfectly blends power and maneuverability, making it a top choice for players with an aggressive playing style. This responsive paddle features a lighter swing weight and enhanced pop, catering to those who prioritize speed and agility on the court.

It maintains a firm feel while providing a lower trajectory, making it ideal for players who prefer a controlled flight path. Its unique design caters to those seeking the perfect balance between power and precision.

This model is notably associated with Tyson McGuffin, one of the most popular male players, who played a significant role in its design. Previously sponsored by Selkirk, Tyson has long favored a shorter handle and thinner core, making the design of this paddle a natural fit for his playing style. With his one-handed backhand, Tyson doesn’t require a longer handle, allowing him to maximize his performance with this model.

As I discussed regarding the Perseus 3 14mm, the benefits of the 14mm option over the 16mm include a lighter swing weight, increased pop on counters, and a lower ball trajectory. However, this comes with trade-offs: the firmer, harsher feel and a tighter sweet spot can make it more challenging to master.

Although the sweet spot on the Magnus 3 14mm is slightly better than that of the Perseus 3 14mm, it remains more demanding compared to the 16mm options. Nevertheless, for those who prefer 14mm paddles, the sweet spot on this model aligns well with other elongated 14mm designs, so there’s no need to hesitate if you’re already a fan of this paddle thickness.

Tyson is renowned for his powerful serves, aggressive drives, and exceptional control at the net. The Magnus 3 14mm has enhanced his threat level during net play, allowing him to counterattack more effectively and frequently.

While the harsher feel and tighter sweet spot may make this paddle more niche, it still has its place among power-seeking players who value maneuverability and prefer the lower ball flight that the thinner core provides. Ultimately, choosing between the Magnus 3 14mm and the Perseus 3 14mm comes down to personal preference regarding handle length, ensuring that players can find the right fit for their unique style.

JOOLA Collin Johns Scorpeus 3S 16mm

The Scorpeus 3S 16mm is a standout paddle known for its forgiving nature and balanced performance, making it a top choice among players. With its shorter and wider design, it caters to individuals of various skill levels, delivering power without compromising control.

Collin Johns, one of the world’s best right-sided players, competes with this model. While the Magnus 3 and Perseus 3 paddles are powerful and have their benefits, the Scorpeus models truly excel in this lineup.

They provide substantial power, though it is slightly moderated by the paddle’s shorter and wider shape, making it easier to control while still tapping into that big power potential. This paddle also plays very forgivingly and is highly maneuverable, increasing its appeal and accessibility to a wider range of players.

The Scorpeus 3 16mm and 14mm models represent the first true power paddles with a standard shape. With their shorter and wider design, they deliver the forgiving nature of a standard paddle while boasting the power and pop traditionally associated with true power paddles. This combination is significant, and I anticipate many players will appreciate these features.

I also admire the decision to pair the standard shape with a slightly longer handle, measuring 5.25 inches. This extended handle allows for the comfortable execution of two-handed shots. We are witnessing a rising trend among brands to combine standard-shaped paddles with longer handles, contrasting with the historical norm where most brands paired standard shapes with shorter handles.

The only trade-off with the Scorpeus 3 compared to the elongated designs of the Perseus 3 and Magnus 3 is the reach. You should lean into the kitchen as far or cover as much court. However, the benefits of manageable power, lighter swing weight, and increased forgiveness make this trade-off worthwhile.

For those new to standard-shaped paddles, adjusting to the new length may take time, and not everyone will be able to adapt. Still, for those who can, the benefits of this series are well worth it.

Who would benefit from the Scorpeus 3 16mm? If you’re concerned about handling the high power typical of this series, the Scorpeus 3 shape is ideal. It provides access to solid power but is toned down for easier control. Plus, it offers greater maneuverability and a larger sweet spot, enhancing the overall playing experience.

JOOLA Anna Bright Scorpeus 3S 14mm

The Scorpeus 3S 14mm paddle artfully blends the advantages of a standard shape with the dynamic power of a 14mm design. It’s lightweight, fast, and forgiving, making it a fantastic choice for players seeking a versatile paddle that performs well in both power and control. One of the standout players who uses this model is Anna Bright, one of the top female competitors in the sport.

Unlike other elongated 14mm paddles that tend to have tighter sweet spots, the Scorpeus 3S offers a more generous sweet spot thanks to its standard shape. This feature ensures you won’t be held back during play while still benefiting from the rapid hand speed, enhanced pop on counters, and lower ball trajectory that the 14mm design provides.

Typically, standard-shaped paddles have a softer feel compared to elongated ones, but that’s not quite the case with the Scorpeus 3S. It retains a firmer, harsher feel akin to other 14mm paddles, which some players may find to be a drawback.

The Scorpeus 2 14mm model similarly offers power comparable to the 16mm version but has a bit more pop at the net, aligning with the performance of elongated models in the series. Although both the 14mm and 16mm models deliver similar power levels, the 14mm version may feel less bouncy upon impact, resulting in greater consistency during thirds and resets.

However, feedback from other players suggests a preference for the 16mm option due to its perceived better control. Choosing between these paddles may come down to personal preference.

If you’re used to playing with 16mm paddles, transitioning to a 14mm model may not be necessary, given that the 16mm options still offer substantial power and pop. However, players accustomed to 14mm paddles might find the 16mm options in this series appealing, as they deliver power and pop typically absent in standard 16mm paddles while offering a more comfortable feel compared to the 14mm.

The reasons to choose the 14mm over the 16mm could include a preference for the feedback from firmer paddles, the desire for a high-power, low-swing weight paddle, or an appreciation for the lower ball trajectory that 14mm options provide.

So, who would benefit from the Scorpeus 3 14mm? It’s ideal for those seeking a paddle that is light, fast, and forgiving yet still powerful. If you’re apprehensive about the firmer feel associated with 14mm paddles, the 16mm model may be a better fit. Nevertheless, there will be players who cherish and thrive with the Scorpeus 3 14mm.

Which Models Were My Favorites?

They have tested all the models in the 3S series, and the Hyperion and Scorpeus emerged as favorites. The Hyperion’s maneuverability and balanced performance make it a standout choice for players seeking speed and precision. Meanwhile, the Scorpeus’s forgiving nature and impressive power make it a versatile option for a wide range of playing styles.

Both models offer unique advantages that cater to different player preferences, making them excellent choices for those looking to enhance their game with the latest paddle technology.

Are These Worth $280?

The price tag of $280 reflects the advanced technology and performance capabilities of the JOOLA 3S paddles. For players seeking a competitive edge and willing to invest in their game, the 3S series offers a unique combination of power, control, and durability that justifies the cost.

While there may be more affordable options on the market, the JOOLA 3S paddles deliver a level of performance that stands out, making them a worthwhile investment for serious players.

Final Thoughts

In a rapidly evolving pickleball landscape, the JOOLA 3S Paddle Series represents a significant advancement in paddle technology. With its innovative design, diverse options, and exceptional performance, the 3S series is poised to make a lasting impact on the game.

For players seeking to elevate their play with cutting-edge equipment, the JOOLA 3S paddles offer a compelling blend of power, control, and versatility. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or an enthusiastic amateur, these paddles have something to offer, promising a dynamic and rewarding playing experience that will keep you at the top of your game.
